Facts about Skokie, Illinois
Considered a suburb of Chicago, Skokie is formally organized as a village. With a population exceeding 64,000, it’s often referred to as the world’s largest village. The village name is derived from the Potawatomi word for "marsh", which was considered more appropriate than the original name of Niles Center. In fact, when a name change was needed to distinguish the village from the nearby town of Niles, shortening the nickname of “Skokie Marsh” was easily the most popular choice.
The village’s history and culture are greatly influenced by Judaism. In fact, the population of the village in the middle of the 20th century was composed of 58% of the populace who identified as Jewish. Today, the village is still the proud location for the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center.
History and those who contributed to it are important in the village. Since 1991, the Skokie Festival of Cultures has celebrated that history, including agricultural and industrial histories, has influenced life in Skokie. The Skokie Park District is composed of 24 acres of parkland and operates ten facilities within the village. Considered one of the top 100 places to live in the United States, the village seems poised to remain so in the year to come.
