Located in what is known as the Chicagoland area, Evanston is a mere 12 miles from Chicago’s city center. With a population of just under 74,000, the city is more than a bedroom community. It sports quite a few features of its own.
Incorporated as a town in 1863, it was not until 1892 that the citizens voted to become a city. By the following year, the new city became among the first to have street lights using electricity.
Generations of children have been delighted by an invention that took place within Evanston: Tinkertoys. The city is also one of several that claim to be the birthplace of the ice cream sundae.
